Wave head silver ( Draped Bust dollar) is the U.S. mint from 1795 to 1803, cast a silver dollar. The U.S. Mint reproduced the silver in the 1830s to 1850s, but regardless of the year the coin was minted, the date on the coin was 1804. The coin, the second silver dollar produced by the Federal government after the wave-hair Statue of Liberty, was minted in 1794. The exact designer is still unknown, but it is believed to have been created by portrait painter Gilbert Stewart. The names of the models described by the heads of the figures on the COINS have not been determined, with some sources attributing Ann Wheeling Bingham.
In October 1795, the new mint Director, Elias Budino, ordered the mint to use the 89.2 percent silver ratio authorized by Congress instead of the 90 percent that had been used since the start of the coin in 1794. Thanks in large part to the decline in silver deposits, the number of silver COINS minted by the Mint dropped sharply in the last two years of the 18th century. In 1804, the silver was discontinued, and the last age on the COINS produced during this period was 1803.
In 1834, production of silver was temporarily resumed when refined coinage sets were provided for diplomatic trips to Asia. Because mint officials had mistakenly assumed that the last age to produce the markings on silver COINS was 1804, the new refined COINS were also engraved that year. The mint has since produced a handful of 1804 silver COINS, which are now rare and valuable.
